Belhaven

John Johnstone took ownership of the site in 1719 and it is widely accepted that under his ownership the brewery started brewing for commercial sale.

1815, saw the end of the Johnstone dynasty when Ellis Dudgeon married into the Johnstone family. For nearly 150 years, the brewery traded as Dudgeon & Co. Under Ellis Dudgeon and his successor, son-in-law Alexander Hunter, wide varieties of ales were produced.

By the 1970s, the malting side of the business that had seen the company through two world wars, was feeling the strain of competition from modern automated plants. In 1972, family ownership ended as the business was sold. But this end was just the beginning of a twenty-year vibrant and significant period of growth for Belhaven.

1993 and a Management buy-out led by Stuart Ross enabled the management team to further expand and develop the business. Most recently (2005), Belhaven was bought by Greene King and continues brewing of a wide variety of award winning ales.

Wee Heavy

Alcohol content: 6.50%

It may have come from a right old recipe but Wee Heavy fits the bill today as much as it ever has. It is a classic Scottish heavy but has a lightness of flavour and a great reddish color in the glass. Cracking stuff if we do say so ourselves.

St. Andrews

Alcohol content: 4.60%

A real classic, Belhaven’s St. Andrews Ale is inspired by another great Scottish invention – golf. It’s simple really – a truly great beer, great balance and great flavors; just the thing to quench the thirst after a day on the course.
Belhaven’s St. Andrews Ale is available in cask as well as bottle.

Scottish Ale

Alcohol content: 3.90%

Malty and hoppy, the classic Scottish Ale has been brewed longer than any of the other beers they produce. Delivering a sweet, smooth, and creamy finish, Scottish Ale has a stunning ruby color in the glass.

Twisted Thistle

Alcohol content: 6.10%

A stunning India Pale Ale (IPA), do not think that Belhaven’s Twisted Thistle has anything jaggy, spiky, prickly or otherwise pain-inflicting in its nature. Quite the opposite; your taste buds will tingle with pleasure after a sip or two of this golden nectar. This is a real treat from the master brewers in Dunbar.
