Deschutes Brewery

In 1993, Deschutes moved into its current brewing facility and has continued expanding and improving the facilities. With a 50-barrel traditional gravity brew house and a new one-of-a-kind 131-barrel Huppmann brew system from Germany, Deschutes now creates and experiments with specialty batches of limited beers while brewing large quantities of everyone’s favorites like Mirror Pond Pale Ale. Consistently producing the highest quality beers is always Deschutes’ number one priority and commitment.
Deschutes Brewery is excited to announce that Mirror Pond Pale Ale and Black Butte Porter are now available on draft at several pubs and alehouses in Austin, TX; look for these two beers in the Dallas/Fort Worth area starting May 5th.

Hop Trip

This Fresh Hop Pale Ale is all about celebrating the hop harvest in the fall. Fresh picked hops have to be added to the brew immediately and in abundance. Roughly 680 pounds of Crystal hops from Doug Weathers’ farm outside Salem, Oregon will be added to each 120 barrel batch in addition to some dry kilned whole flower hops. That adds up to approximately 5.7 pounds of hops per barrel brewed. Another deliciously interesting beer in our Bond Street Series.

In 2006 we thought it would be fun to document the trip so Tim Cash from FARfromEARTH films hopped on board with his camera in hand. Click here to watch video.

Hop in the Dark C.D.A.

What is C.D.A. you ask? Cascadian Dark Ale is a style that emerged on the NW Coast of North America in the early 21st Century. NW hops are prominent, balanced with malt, roast malts give color and flavor, but body should be reminiscent of an IPA, not heavy like a porter or stout. The style is not only gaining traction w/ brewers in the Pacifice Northwest, but is starting to spread to other regions. In this specific brew you will find aromas of Cascade, Amarillo, and Centennial hops float over a gentle undercurrent of subtle malt complexities.

Hop Henge

First brewed in 2006, Deschutes Brewery’s Hop Henge Experimental IPA reappears this year with more extreme hop flavors than ever before. The new formulation is the epitome of the brewery’s experimental style and commitment to innovation, while gratifying their unquenchable thirst for beautifully balanced hoppy beers. The newest incarnation of Hop Henge uses several new hop processes and techniques to create a truly unique and unexpected beer.

Several pounds of Centennial & Cascade hops are in each barrel with a heavy dry-hop presence to top it off. A blend of crystal, pale and carastan malts creates an overall biscuity characteristic that is dense and muscular, building the alcohol base to support the monstrous hop profile.

When one of our brewers came up with the name Hop Henge, he also came up with the idea of actually recreating Stonehenge, only with hop bales. We were up for the challenge and even though the weather did not want to cooperate, we pulled it off and threw a party afterwards.

Mirror Pond Pale Ale

Deschutes Brewery’s other flagship beer, Mirror Pond Pale Ale, became a year-round offering in 1996 and uses generous quantities of Cascade hops, offering a lush floral aroma with a balanced malt body.

It received its name because Mirror Pond is just a short walk from the Deschutes Brewery & Public House in downtown Bend and reflects the Three Sisters Mountains. This scenic spot alongside the Deschutes River is the locals’ choice for summer festivals and concerts.

Black Butte Porter

Our flagship beer, Black Butte Porter defined Deschutes as a place intent to follow its own brewing muse. At a time when dark beer was viewed with suspicion, this deep, satiny brew went out and dispelled the myths for a generation of enthusiasts. Black Butte is rich in flavor yet easy to drink, with a creamy, smooth mouth feel. The slight hop bitterness up front only enhances the distinctive chocolate and roasted finish to come. It continues to reap accolades and medals from those who know best.

Black Butte Porter, the number one selling craft porter in the country!

Deschutes Green Lakes Organic Ale

Environmental pedigree aside, Green Lakes Organic Ale is a finely balanced beer with a mellow malt profile and subtle hop leading edge. On the ingredient roster: five types of 100% organic malted barleys and a complementary dose of Liberty and Sterling hops. It’s a profoundly satisfying, easy-drinking beer.

What’s more, no mere enviro wink and nod, Green Lakes Organic Ale is a true ode to Mother Earth. Both product and process have been carefully considered. Deschutes’s brewhouses are organically certified by Oregon Tilth. And while all malts are organic, the hops story is a less told eco-tale. A full 80% Salmon-Safe, they’re grown so that surrounding streams are shaded, cool and run-off free, allowing migrating salmon to flourish.

Enjoy in good taste, and conscience.

Red Chair Northwest Pale Ale

Red Chair NWPA is named after the oldest operating lift at Mt. Bachelor here in Central Oregon. And just as the locals line up for that fabled mountain ride, they flock to our Bend brew pub whenever it goes on tap. One thing we’ve learned, “when the brew pub talks, listen.” For the past two decades, the serious beer fanatics down there seldom miss when we’ve hit on something truly special.

What makes this copper colored beauty so wildly popular? As a debut Northwest Pale Ale, it’s an adventure all its own. It has a plush body with satiny caramel flavors derived from seven varieties of malt. Yet, despite it all, it remains a hop-forward ale with that distinctive citrusy punch. Just minus any mouth-puckering bitterness.

Jubelale

Did you know that Jubelale was the first beer ever bottled by Deschutes Brewery? Every year, fall’s crisp, cool air signals the imminent arrival of winter. Thoughts of snow, friends and family, the holidays, and – Jubelale. Brewed with dark crystal malt creating a luscious holiday note with bountiful hops to excite your taste buds – it’s easy to see why Jubelale is the perfect complement to the season.

Every year Deschutes Brewery selects a Northwest artist to create an image evocative of the season’s festive atmosphere. In 2008, Pam Jersey Bird, who lives in Sisters, painted a winding, abstract river running through the open spaces of Central Oregon’s desert, surrounded by fluttering snowfall.

“Because Jubelale is ‘A Festive Winter Ale,’ I wanted to portray a scene that was lively and colorful but also captured Central Oregon’s snowy climate,” says Pam Jersey Bird. “I decided to focus on the river that is the namesake of the brewery and also inspired the name of our town. Emphasizing the curve of the bank, I added snowflakes and ice crystals, which surround the blue moving waters of the Deschutes River.”

Inversion IPA

Our year-round beer answer to the siren call of the hop. Inversion’s trio of American hops deliver an over-the-top nose with hints of orange and grapefruit. Then we toss in seven days of dry-hopping for good measure. Because we can.

No mere hop sledgehammer, Inversion is a careful fusion. Crystal and Carastan malts woven throughout provide for a surprisingly soft, caramel complexity for an 80-IBU IPA.

Named for a local weather phenomenon where clouds hug the base of the mountain only to reveal clear skies further up, it can turn a beer drinker’s IPA preconceptions upside down as well.

Twilight Ale

The top’s down. The burgers are grilling. The shadows are long. The days stretch late into the evening. Summer has its own rules. And, at Deschutes, its own beer.

We brew Twilight Ale to be a lighter, but full-flavored ale with a balanced malt profile and a harmonious blend of four hops. Then a final heady dose of bold Amarillos creates a distinctive finish.

We took Twilight as a challenge. The chance to prove that light doesn’t mean boring. Some beers go perfectly with foods, this one pairs with lawn chairs, bare feet and life kicked-back. Best enjoyed chilled and served outside.

Cinder Cone Red

Cinder Cone Red’s diverse selection of hops and barley captivates thirsty palates with its toffee-like flavor, intense citrus aroma and defined bitterness.

Located on the northern slope of Mt. Bachelor, the Cinder Cone was also known as “Red Hill” due to its reddish color that is revealed as the seasons change, the weather warms and the snow melts. It’s spring. Time to get outside.
